Beautiful, old, Levy Baptist Church has a great history and has had a real impact on North Little Rock, AR. In September 2005, the church began removing pews to prepare for a "new" sanctuary inside our gracious old building.

Carefully renovated, the "new" Levy Sanctuary retains the charm and character of the architectural style in which the building was built, Colonial, while updating it for the needs of today. The first sermon preached from the new pulpit was on December 25, Christmas Day, 2005. You can view the sanctuary renovations in the 360 degree tour, above.

Our newly renovated sanctuary also speaks to what's going on in the people of our church. We are seeking to retain the best of our past while eagerly embracing the changes that will make us relevant to our community. We invite you to come and be a part of us.

Stained Glass Windows

The nativity window, pictured above, is rich in symbolism. It is the first of six which depict events in the life of Christ. Its star of Bethlehem , radiant beams, and manger, depict the birth of Christ. IHS are letters representing Christ. They are the first three letters of Christ's name in Greek, the language of the New Testament. This window is a constant reminder of Jesus and the miracle of His birth. This window was lovingly given to Levy Baptist Church by Diana Harper, in memory of Alvin Harper.

The window pictured above contains symbols associated with the ordinance of baptism. The dove represents the Holy Spirit, which descended as such at Jesus' baptism. The cascading waters falling represent the “much water” required for proper baptism, by immersion. This window was installed in memoriam of Alvin Harper by his wife, Diana Harper, as part of the initial gifts to the renovation project.

The disciples' window, pictured above, features fish caught in a net. It reminds us of Jesus, a fisher of men, calling out His disciples and reminds us of our own calling to be disciples. When Christ began His ministry, one of the first acts was to gather His disciples. >From the Scriptures we have (Matthew 4:18) “And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'”

The window pictured above, with loaves and fishes, reminds worshipers of the feeding of the 5,000. It is meant to symbolize, however, all the miracles performed by Jesus Christ. It, with the other windows, is an ever-present spiritual lesson to those who worship in this church. It was a gift to the newly renovated Levy Baptist Sanctuary by George and Esta Dahlke.

The medium of the stained glass artist is not only colored glass but also light itself. The windows of Levy Baptist are designed to be responsive to the changing direction and quality of the sunlight at different times of day and through the seasons of the year. The colors of a window will often be transformed in the brief moment of observation. However, two windows in the Levy Baptist Sanctuary are not accessible to sunlight. Thus, a challenge was presented to the architect and artists to design two windows for artificial lighting. One of these is the crown of thorns window, represented above. The crown of thorns is one of the symbols of the crucifixion of Christ. “And the soldiers led him away...clothed with purple and twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on Him.” (Mark 15:16-17)

This window was given by an anonymous donor.

The cross and crown window represents Christ's victory. It is so appropriate that this window follows the crown of thorns. Christ was shown in victory at His resurrection, His ascension, and one day when He returns, He'll be wearing a crown as King of kings and Lord of lords. This Second Coming Window puts hope in the heart of every believer who is looking for the return of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

In addition to Levy's six large windows, there are eleven smaller windows. Two of these windows have been purchased for naming opportunities. The prayer room window was given by Dub and Doris Waymack. The South side lower window was given by Bob and Judy Sharpe in honor of their grandchildren, Georgia Sage and Aaron Sharpe Ring. Shortly after the window was installed, Georgia Sage and Aaron Sharpe posed on the window sill for an historic picture.

The prayer of Levy Baptist Church is that all who worship within her Sanctuary may come to the realization that our life is like a stained glass window. As itself it is a beautiful masterpiece that someone has created, but it has not reached its fullest potential. Without having light shine through, it does nothing because the person observing sees nothing. The more light that shines through the more beauty the beholder takes in. As Christians we need the light of Christ to shine more brightly through us. The more of Christ that we allow to shine through the more the world looks on in amazement at such a beautiful masterpiece.
